Aquablation therapy is a robotic-assisted, heat-free waterjet procedure used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate. It uses real-time ultrasound imaging to create a surgical map, then a robotically-controlled waterjet removes the obstructing prostate tissue. Aquablation can treat prostates of any size and has low rates of sexual side effects compared to traditional BPH surgeries. Dr. Liu-Chen performs Aquablation at his Los Angeles practice.

Andrew Liu-Chen, MD

Bio

Dr. Andrew Liu-Chen was born and raised in Southern California in the 626 San Gabriel Valley. He went to Northwestern University for undergraduate studies and had a brief detour working for Epic Systems installing electronic medical records. He then attended the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University where he graduated as a member of the AOA honor society. He subsequently returned to Los Angeles and completed his urologic residency at the University of Southern California where he also trained at LAC+USC (now Los Angeles General Medical Center). During training, he received multiple awards including the resident teaching award, resident research award, as well as the LAC+USC physician of the year. He then completed a fellowship in Robotic Urologic Oncology and Minimally Invasive Surgery at USC training with pioneers of robotic surgery under the leadership of Dr. Inderbir Gill. He is now a physician of the Urology Group of Southern California. Dr. Liu-Chen is proud to provide urologic care to all Angelenos including those with HMO’s and Medi-Cal. He enjoys spending his free time out and about Los Angeles with his wife, child, and dog.

My Approach to Care

Urology is deeply personal. It touches quality of life, kidney function, and cancer—issues that can affect nearly every part of a person's life. My own grandfather underwent immunotherapy, major bladder surgery, and nephrostomy tubes. Watching him go through those treatments gave me a lasting appreciation for what patients and their families carry beyond what appears in a chart.

I try to treat every patient the way I would want my own family to be treated: with honesty, respect, and a plan built around the individual. In urology, many conditions do not fit into simple black-and-white categories. Symptoms, priorities, and tolerance for risk exist on a spectrum, and the right answer for one patient may not be right for another.

I may not have an immediate answer for every problem, but I will listen carefully, explain the options clearly, and work with each patient to find the best path forward.
